For Whaea Carolyn Makiri, earning hers is more than personal growth. It's a call to others to embrace learning and deepen their cultural identity. One already answered by two Rōpū Kaumātua members at Te Whānau o Waipareira inspired to follow her lead.

Her path here wasn't easy. Whaea Carolyn left school at 15 and had never set foot in tertiary education. In 2000, she tried to return through a wānanga. But life had other plans. In 2012, she tried again at the University of Auckland, only to be told she'd need to learn English first, an experience that left her discouraged. In 2020, she was accepted into Te Wānanga o Aotearoa to study a Māori component but just as she began, her late husband was diagnosed with brain cancer, and she put everything on hold to care for him.

Through it all, whakapapa has been her guiding force. Now, at 67, she has her sights set on a degree by the time she turns 70.

"I know what I need to do now, and I'm ready to keep on studying. Whakapapa is a powerful motivator, especially in Māori culture. Understanding and connecting with our ancestors has brought me immense purpose and belonging."
